User Interface & Product Design

|
| |
| The interface was
designed to be inviting and easy to use. Lots of white
space around objects and a simple color palette enabled
the program to feel friendly and unintimidating. |

be altered to exist under three conditions: inactive,
debossed and embossed. |
|
The Challenge
Back in the late 1990's interface design was quite different
than today. The technology was limited, however the importance
of self defining images and the user experience has always
been paramount. Fathom had been developing marketing
materials for this telecommunications
industry
provider
for several
years
before being asked to develop their user interface.
Our experience with UI design as well as being major developers
of TCSI's corporate brand made us prime candidates
for
the task.
The product, Assurance Director, had flourished
into a valuable tool and was ready for the next step.
It needed
a visual language that was more refined and consistent
with other TCSI materials.

|
| In
1999, to finalize the user interface for the Assurance
Director program, Fathom developed over 300 icons, splash
screens and support graphics. |
The
Process
Over 300 icons were identitifed and required to complete the new release of the
product, version 2.0. Once the technical parameters were defined, Fathom studied
the user experience for direction and inspiration on design style. A common challenge
with interface design is choosing and creating imagery that will recreate accurately
and consistency at varying sizes.

this small workspace, interface designs are required to use
a limiting 256 RGB color palette. |

|
The
Solution
Because of the technical nature of the program, it was crucial
to create imagery that was inviting and unintimidating. Our
solution applied primary color treatments to simplistic three
dimensional objects resulting in toy like buttons.
Users found the new images effortless to interpret resulting
in quicker navigation and higher user satisfaction.
The interface creates a more pleasant and efficient experience,
indicating value for our client and consequently theirs. |

The
Assurance Director Splash Screen featured the "leading
global provider" symbols
which became the core symbol in TCSI's corporate branding. |
