CompXchange
User Interface and Product Design

Clearly labeled steps gave the user an ability to quickly navigate through the program

The Challenge
Fathom had been developing branding materials for CompXchange for over a year prior to our involvement with their product line. Our first effort for this startup involved creating their corporate logo. We eventually produced all their marketing materials including their web site. Because of Fathom's experience with interface design, but more importantly our involvement with their brand development, we became ideal candidates to give a face to their core product.

The product was a program that generated compensation reports, primarily targeted to HR professionals. Accurate compensation for workforces in organizations that base pay on performance is crucial in achieving employee satisfaction.

The interface was designed to be inviting and easy to use. Each step consisted of minimal text and decision making, creating an overall simple process.

The Process
A key requirement in the design of the program was clear navigation. The program provided a variety of features and processes, however the interface needed to communicate simplicity and clarity. In response to simplicity, we applied traditional tabs to each core function and kept content to a minimum for each step in the process. In addition, we created an expanding tree navigation within each function which allowed users to quickly access and input data. It also acted as a site map, particularly useful to new users.
We leveraged their color palette established during the corporate identity in an effort to strongly promote their new brand at every opportunity. A dominating yellow background color established the tone of this unique product and conservative blues acted as the highlights.

The Solution
The end result was a program that was intuitive, but more importantly, functional. The finalized design was an extension of their recently developed branding strategy. It increased customer awareness and provided a foundation for future products. The programs' ability to generate accurate reports regarding variable pay scenarios, was well received and became the launching pad in the development of other related products.
